My students are English Language Learners from mostly Spanish-speaking countries. Many of them are brand-new to the United States. I enjoy helping them acclimate both socially and academically to their new country. In addition to language learning, another challenge that some of my students face is one of poverty. Our school is a Title I school. Many of our students come from low socio-economic backgrounds. Literacy tends to be low on the list of needs and priorities when paying the bills and knowing that you will be able to eat takes first place.
