Future U.S. Open Tennis Champion!
Funded Oct 8, 2018Thank you so much for your donations that allowed my students to have access to tennis nets. My students have learned how to hit a tennis ball over a net for the first time in four years. Most of my students have never even held a tennis racket so getting the opportunity to try a new sport was great for them. I had one second grade student who was afraid to try when the nets first went up, but after a little help from me and some encouragement from her friends she tried to hit the ball, she missed the first few times but eventually got the hang of it.
My students were completely surprised when they walked into the gym the first time and saw the nets. All they kept saying was "this is so cool" we get to try and play real tennis. Some ran over the the nets to see how they went together and constantly asked questions about them.
My students completed their tennis unit, some students enjoyed it so much they had their parents sign them up for the New York Junior Tennis Leagues which is free for students in NYC.
Again I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generous donations.”

Funded Mar 29, 2016My students are completely loving the soccer nets. We started using them right away with the introduction of our soccer club. The students love to set them up and take them down at the end since they collapse. We now started using the nets in our soccer unit. Students are learning how to shoot a soccer ball and the goals make it easier for them to know if they scored or not.
When the students first see the goals they ask me if they are giant tennis rackets, I tell them they have to wait and see. When I open them my students who already know how to play soccer are extremely excited because they know that we are moving onto the shooting part of the unit.
With the school year coming to a close, I am looking for new things to introduce the students to next year. I am thinking lacrosse, however I am also thinking baseball. Just need to get batting tee's and foam bats and balls.”

Basketball Enthusiasts!
Funded Dec 4, 2015Thank you so much for donating to my classroom. My kids were extremely excited to see the basketballs, my first and second graders were jumping up and down when I took them out of the closet, third and fourth grades (mainly the boys) started talking about games they could play and my fifth grade (again mainly the boys), started playing with them the minute they arrived. We not only use them during class but they use them during recess.
As of right now only my first, second and third graders are using them in class. I started the unit off with dribbling, which gives the students an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the ball, especially those who haven't really played with a basketball. I taught them the correct way to dribble (finger tips not palm, knees bent, bounce is waist high and next to you not in front of you). Thanks to your generous donation I had enough basketballs for just about every student every period. I taught them a game to play while dribbling called knock-out. We are no longer working on dribbling and they still ask to play it.
Currently we are working on passing, the bounce pass to be more precise, since some of my younger girls are afraid of the ball. I would say that 85% of them got the hang of the bounce pass quickly and we are playing games doing that. Chest pass is next, and finally shooting (which they are all looking forward to). I have numerous games for shooting some of which they have played and love.
Without your help I would not have been able to give these students the fundamentals that they can take with them into the future.”

Ms. Flynn
