I am a former school administrator who has returned to the classroom full time. I currently teach grade 6 language arts and social studies. Since I have not been teaching for nearly 13 years, I would love to update my classroom library with current and relevant books that offer an array of topics ranging anywhere from classic literature to fantasy to inclusive and diverse stories. One of my goals as a teacher is to encourage and teach my students to be independent readers. One of the ways I see myself supporting the students with this is by offering them award-winning, rich and diverse books to read independently. For this project, the books I am interested in getting for my classroom library will be available to ALL of my students for independent reading; students will have a variety of books to choose from based on their interests and curiosity. The books I plan to get will offer a wide-range of reading levels as well as genres and subject matter. The best way for students to grow in any subject is to read more and learn how to become an independent reader. In my experience teaching grade 6 this year, I can see the love for reading in my students. I often hear them discussing books they have read and often see them reading books when they have completed other assignments. It is my goal to keep that excitement for literature alive in my students, and I am hopeful you will help me make this happen for them.
