It's a Bug's Life!
Funded Jan 24, 2017Thank you for your generous donations! We had so much fun learning about the life cycle of the butterfly and ladybug. The students were able to each get a caterpillar to keep on their desk until it formed a pupa. We became real scientists and got to observe the metamorphosis of the ladybugs and butterflies. The students took notes in their Butterfly Observation Journal at each stage of development. We noted size, color, and other attributes.
When the students arrived and saw the caterpillars in the cups for them they could not contain their excitement. There were squeals of joy and lots of jumping. Thank you for creating this special moment for my students. Each child named their caterpillar and kept it at their desk until they formed a pupa. They loved coming to school each day to see their caterpillar and observe its growth. Many described their favorite part as naming their caterpillar. The pupa's were then transferred to a larger habitat that they could live in once they hatched. After all of the pupa's hatched into butterflies we released them into our class garden. It was really a magical experience to watch our little butterflies fly off.
Our ladybugs were kept in a separate habitat but that did not stop the students from coming in every morning to check on them and see their growth. Ladybug larva look like tiny six legged alligators so the students liked observing them daily to see if they were changing into the ladybugs we normally see.
The students are still talking about our butterflies and ladybugs and I cannot thank you enough for donating to this experience.”
With gratitude,
