My students are incredibly sweet and caring individuals. In the first month and a half of school, I have seen them translate for one another, teach each other how to open up locks (a task that is new to sixth graders), applaud one another for an accomplish, and be incredibly patient with a student who is a selective mute in our class. My students are also determined to learn, however they face a number of academic hurdles such as trouble focusing, the fact that English is not their first language, and because they are a number of grades below current grade level. Furthermore, as a Title 1 school (defined as meeting the educational needs of low-achieving children in our Nation's highest-poverty schools) the books in our library are around 50 years old. As such, it is crucial for them to have access to books that they WANT to read and books that are relevant to their current lives. Access to such books will increase their desire to read thus increasing their academic success.
