Our students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and often do not have experiences with reading and interacting with treasured authors.
We are building a love of authors, characters, and sharing how fun reading is! This will help our students become more engaged with learning how to read. These books will serve as motivation to join the literate world!
Teachers and students will use these books directly in their classrooms. Teachers will read them aloud and make connections to writing instruction and students will be encouraged to read them independently!
When students learn that reading is a fun experience, which will happen from our teachers reading aloud to them, they want to learn the skills and strategies that will help them develop into proficient readers.
Research also tells us that repeated readings help students grow as readers. So when a teacher models fluent reading with a mentor text, students are more easily attracted to that title because it becomes a familiar text.
