My students are highly visual, tactile learners that are motivated by building and seeing results. My students, currently ranging from 7th-11th grade, have all been diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Being a "high functioning" Autism Unit, my students are independent, bright learners who have high interest in a few, limited areas. These areas all revolve around STEM and technology. My students access to necessary STEM and technology tools are limited, as we are not a STEM/technology high school. We are currently working with Code.org to enhance our understanding of Algebra and Computer Science. The overwhelming success and interest in this subject has brought me here, asking for your help to expand our material base. The supplies we are requesting are STEM/technology materials that will support my students in working with circuits, basic electronics, and robotics. As my students are currently deeply engaged in Algebra and Computer Science, the next step is to show them how to apply this knowledge in a related field. My current plan involves working from basic electrical fundamentals, calculating resistances, voltage, amps, and working our way up to programming robots using the Ozobot 2.0 and building machines with the littleBits Steam Student Set. I have also requested the Makey Makey Invention Kit for Everyone as it will allow all students, not just those in advanced Science and Math, to access the STEM curriculum.
