This project requests a variety of fiction books with diverse characters as well as nonfiction books including Who Was Jackie Robinson, Who is Nelson Mandela, and Who is Michelle Obama. Every year I try to create a library that is the heart of our classroom and inspire my students to take ownership over their reading goals and progress. When students find a book series or characters they are excited about, their reading progress soars! Increasing the diversity of the characters and people in the books in our library is a priority of mine. Reflecting on our current library, most of the books do not reflect my students' backgrounds. Despite the diversity of the students at my school, the majority of the books in the classroom library feature white characters. I want to change that. I have carefully explored lists of children's books and chosen a group of high-quality children's books that feature people and characters of diverse backgrounds. Children need to see successful people who look like them everywhere, including in books. I am convinced that access to books that reflect who my students are will make them feel empowered and more excited about reading which will increase student achievement.
