I teach in Title 1 school in a highly poverty stricken area of NYC.
The students, predominantly Hispanic and Black, are burdened with more responsibilities than can be imagined, yet they come to school each day and try to learn the lessons infront of them. The students and their parents' lives are plagued with the harsh reality of life and poverty and many times the task of putting food on the table has to take precedence over school. This hardship can cause a lack of focus and create a stressor that makes it nearly impossible to harness the students' abilities.
