  • iPads for Incredible 4th Grade Scholars!

    Funded Oct 22, 2018

Yes! This is exactly what we needed to pump up our math game and Friday enrichment time. My students are thrilled to have use of the iPads. I have also noticed, and am very pleased by, their stewardship of the iPads. We have three iPads in our room now (thank you!) and the students check that they are fully charged, taken care of and put away. They even check that other students are respectful with our materials.

We are so grateful for your generosity. Thank you for believing in public education and the students of Minneapolis. Together, as a community, we can make differences in our students and their future.

Thank you for being part of the change.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Solis

  • Incredible 4th Grade Inventors: STEM Project

    Funded Oct 22, 2018

My students are amazing! They are creative and critical thinkers. And they are budding inventors and engineers. They have incredible imaginations and life-changing dreams.

This gift that you bestowed upon us is amazing too! It has been such a privilege to share the inventor notebooks, non-fiction books and LEGO glasses with my students. It has made such a difference in our classroom. Every Monday we have invention time--we work on one of the invention prompts in the notebook and talk about how inventions are solutions to problems that we encounter. My students love it! It's a great way to start our week.

The LEGO glasses, as you probably suspected, were a big hit too! We used them in context to a nature unit we were working on in Language Arts--the students had to use their favorite aspect of nature to inspire a LEGO glasses creation. There were gardens and oceans and lions. It was amazing.

I am so grateful for this project--it might be one of the more impactful ones we've had this year and I can't wait to do more.

    Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Solis

  • Awesome Books for Awesome 5th Grade Readers!

    Funded May 2, 2018

Thank you so much for your incredible generosity. We love books in our classroom--everyday we have 30 minutes of independent reading. Studies have shown that kids who select their own books and are given uninterrupted time will improve their reading skills and, more importantly, more likely fall in love with reading. Giving this opportunity to my students is one of my most important teacher goals.

With your generosity and the amazing-ness that is Donors Choose, my classroom has one of the most amazing classroom libraries. I think this is an essential component of creating life-long readers--when they have access to high-quality and engaging literature they will be more engaged readers.

The books you sent us are a great fit for my readers. There's a student in my room who started the year as a rather reluctant reader. He claimed that there were "no good books," or he would get stuck on reading the same book over and over again. However, as new books from Donors Choose started to pour in, he became more interested in trying out some of the exciting new titles. The "Nnewts" Graphic Novel trilogy grabbed his attention and he hasn't looked back since. A triumph!

Thank you so much for your support and generosity!”

    Mrs. Solis

  • Books for 4th and 5th Graders!

    Funded Jul 5, 2018

These books and my students--they are inseparable. They love the books that you donated to us--the books are fun, modern and goofy--like my students. It's perfect, really. Thank you for considering and donating to a book project--our library is really the cornerstone of our classroom. There are other locations where my students can access books (public library, school library and their homes)--but our classroom library is communally ours, well-stocked, cozy and filled with friends--I think that makes it unique. We are so grateful and excited to continue to read and love these books.”

  • Awesome Books for Awesome 4th Grade Readers!

    Funded Sep 21, 2018

We are more powerful together than we are alone. My students are learning that incredibly important lesson from the books you've sent us. From science graphic novels to empowering picture books, these books have given my students a lot to think about.

We are loving these books! My students are the leaders and teachers and explorers of the future, the books we've received are the building blocks they need to create a bright future for all of us. We are so grateful that you considered this project.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Solis

  • Essential 4th Grade Supplies to Start Our School Year

    Funded Sep 5, 2018

It's been a couple of weeks since we received our supplies--and we are getting such good use out of them. All of these materials are so essential to our classroom. Pencils, poster paper, markers, and chalk--these products help our classroom operate more smoothly and, let's be honest, more enjoyably. Everyday we use the dry erase circles and we've been celebrating student birthdays with the Smencils (they are very popular, particularly the blueberry). What a fun way to start the year. Thank you for providing us with these materials. We appreciate your dedication to public education. Have a great year!”

  • Centsibility: Financial Literacy and Classroom Economy

    Funded May 2, 2018

Thank you so much for contributing to this project. We have learned so much about our world and economy. Before this project one of my students remarked "I wish we had a class about real-life stuff, like taxes and jobs." And these books and materials made our unit possible. Without the books and materials you sent us, our unit on jobs would not have been as rich or fulfilling. Thank you for your generosity and kindness. My students are the leaders of the future--these wonderful materials will help them to form their ideas and goals.”

  • Moon Mouse: A Light-Show About Imagination

    Funded Feb 16, 2018

This show was the highlight of our year! So many students put Moon Mouse as the best field trip we took this year. What a great way to remember this pivotal grade. This was such an incredible experience for our 5th graders. From the bottom of our 10-year old and 11-year old hearts: THANK YOU!

Moon Mouse was super engaging with the light show and plot twists and turns and a real understanding of how young brains process the world. The show also had a theme that we desperately need for this age group and in the world in which we are living: how to be resilient in the face of bullying and to not give up on one's dreams and goals.

We were also super lucky to meet two of our Super Donors and we are so grateful for the opportunity.

    Again, thank you so much!”

  • Coolest Homework Assignment Ever: Taking Art Home

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

This project is so awesome! Thank you so much for making this possible for my classroom. My students are loving the arts kits and sharing their results with their friends and classmates. We've seen balloon animals, smelly markers, a glitter snow globe and window art. There have been beautiful examples and art that went kind of awry, but that is sometimes the way art goes--not always perfect, but totally engaging and totally personal. We have learned more about ourselves and what we are capable of and our interests. Thank you so much for these opportunities!”
