  • Support Kids Who Craft!

    Funded Aug 11, 2021

Happy New Year! I am so excited to report that we have been learning so much from this Cricut Project. I can't thank you enough for your support. The program that I teach is an Academic, Career, and Essential Skills program. It is essential that my students not only develop their academic skills but they need to develop their career and essential skills as well. When the cricut arrived, my students were very excited! We started out doing a little research about how to use the cricut and found really wonderful video tutorials on how to work the computer program and machine. We also worked with our Occupational Therapist who is very knowledgeable about the Cricut. Our first project was making names for water bottles to be used at school! We then made names for our notebooks! This all required making sure we measured each item and a font that we could read easily. Each student was able to use the Cricut Design Program and was able to print, weed, and place their names on the items using transfer tape. It was such a nice successful moment and my students learned so much in the process! Our Occupational Therapists, who service my students, thought it would be great to collaborate and they worked on these Cricut skills in their OT sessions, which lead to an idea to host a Winter Craft Market! Wow, was that awesome! We even learned how to use the Cricut Heat Press! We made bags and T-shirts and learned so much! My students run a school store called The Snack Shack and have already been designing items to be sold in the store! The ideas are endless and my students have never been so motivated! We read and watch a lot of cricut tutorials and we practice our writing skills by writing step by step tutorials about how to use the cricut. We might even create our own Youtube channel so as to teach other students (and grownups!) how to use the cricut machine! I really can't thank you enough for your support and generosity. My students are learning way more than I had ever imagined and their creativity and success makes them so proud of themselves. When they graduate from my class they will have developed skills that might even allow them to start their own small business! Your support has not only helped the students in my class this year, but will help all my future students as I continue to work in the ACES program. Thank you again!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hyland

  • Everything You Need To Ace Math Class!

    Funded Sep 26, 2018

I just want to take the time to thank you again for all you have done for my students. Your donation provided them with a book that has helped them tremendously already. Each student is able to go home and use this book as a wonderful resource. When doing their homework, they are able to look up skills taught in class. The book provides a variety of examples and user friendly explanations! I continue to receive emails from parents thanking me (which means thanking you!) for providing this book because it has become such a great resource for the parents as well. I often hear that parents need more resources, too, and this book has been quite helpful in allowing parents to help their children.

One day, I overheard a student telling another student at their table that they lost a information sheet I had given them. As I was about to hand him another sheet I heard the other student say 'remember to look in your math book, there's a great explanation in there! And the pictures are really helpful!'

The pages have become a little worn down and this is the best sign of how often my students use these books. Thank you again for your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

  • The Snack Shack Part Three

    Funded Dec 21, 2016

We can't thank you enough for your generosity. Our students are THRIVING in the Snack Shack! They are learning more than we could ever even describe!

Every Friday, the students set up the store, count inventory, and note which items we are running out of. Then, they take their positions. Each student interviewed for a position. We have two store managers that run the cash register and make sure everyone is supported in their role. We have two students who are the delivery staff. They answer the phone and take orders and then pack up the bags for delivery. They are two students who need a lot of social/emotional support so this role is perfect for them! Another student bags the items bought for each customer. She takes a lot of pride in this role and always has to make the decision on which size bag to use.

Our students are thriving both academically and socially each week because of your generosity. They are making real life connections and really enjoy the reading and math that come with running the store. We are so proud of them and are so proud to know that people like you have supported these students who have very significant learning needs.

    Please enjoy the photos attached!”

Although my students are working hard throughout the day during their academic classes, we noticed they require more social and emotional skill development. This project idea stems from wanting to provide our students with a learning experience that will enable them to learn a range of social and emotional skills as well as apply what they are learning academically! We want to engage them in creative, meaningful endeavors that unite them with the school and their peers on a regular basis. The idea of having our students run a small school store was ignited by our passion to give them this type of learning environment! For some students, a school-based organization can provide their first work experience as well as opportunities to learn key career and social skills. This store will empower our students to learn and connect classroom, school community, and career-related skills. They have already surveyed the school on the snacks they prefer and have individually applied for a store position! Now all we need are the snacks! Thank you in advance for your support!! And, if you're in the area, stop in at The Snack Shack!
