Because kindergarteners are still learning how to be in school and what it means to respect each other’s space, they need a dedicated spot that is just for them. When new topics are introduced, I direct them to sit on their personal spot on the rug to help ensure their success. This limits their distractions and helps keep them focused. It also gives them a sense of ownership or belonging in our classroom. They can proudly say, “that is my spot on the rug.” This also takes out the guess work and competition of trying to get the best spot. Spots are rotated throughout the year and the kids know exactly what to expect from their learning experiences.
