Rather than sitting through final exams, students at my school complete a rigorous and engaging cross-curricular project, incorporating all content areas, at the end of each school year. Each grade level focuses on a different topic in sustainability. The 10th grade focus is food justice. Each student writes a lengthy research paper answering a food justice question of their choosing. Our students are then put into small groups where they create lesson plans on their topics that they later teach to 4th and 5th grade students at elementary schools throughout the city. In order for my students to create the most meaningful and effective lesson plans, they will need various supplies that are not provided to us. Color printing, color copy paper, and glue sticks will allow them to create materials for their projects that will undoubtedly have a larger impact on the children that they teach. Graphs, pictures, and charts printed in black and white are not decipherable. Color paper helps to differentiate between multiple tasks, stations, or roles. Interactive notebooks are not possible without glue sticks to insert handouts. These supplies will make a significant difference for my students and will allow them to bring their projects to the next level.
