Funded Dec 16, 2024The Sustainable Lunches: Refrigerator for Food Rescue and Brown Bag Initiatives has been able to thrive and grow thanks to the incredible support of our students, staff, and community partners. We are proud to share that our weekly Brown Bag Lunch giveaways have been a great success. Each Friday, students are offered perishable food items to take home as they head into the weekend. Most recently, we were also able to provide food for students as they prepared to travel for spring break.
A central feature of this initiative has been the community refrigerator, which offers students convenient access to items like juice, yogurt, sandwiches, and cold bottles of water. This refrigerator has become a vital resource for students and a powerful symbol of community care and sustainability.
We are also thrilled to have assembled a dedicated Green Team—a group of student volunteers committed to reducing food waste in our cafeteria. These students collect pre-packaged items such as cereal, bagels, and sandwiches that other students choose not to eat. At the end of each month, any food that remains is donated to the New York City Common Food Pantry. This partnership has significantly reduced food waste while fostering a strong sense of civic responsibility and awareness among our students.
The Sustainable Refrigerator and Brown Bag Project have empowered us—as a school committee and broader community—to take meaningful steps toward a more sustainable future. We are incredibly grateful for the impact this program has made and excited about its continued growth. Looking ahead, we hope to expand our efforts by partnering with a local supermarket to further support our sustainability goals.
We are especially thankful for the presence of the community refrigerator—it has truly brought people together to support one another while promoting environmental stewardship. Together, we are building a stronger, more compassionate, and more sustainable school community.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Thomas-Murray
