Throughout this school year, students will study mentor texts of various genres such as nonfiction narratives, poetry, and drama. They will be paying close attention to the themes each author conveys, each author's style, and his use of figurative language. This ongoing project will help students strengthen their ability to read and analyze literature, to understand literary devices, and to apply the steps of the writing process. Students will have opportunities to discover their own writing styles as they attempt to create similar pieces with themes that reflect personal milestones and memories of loved ones. They need a book binding machine, a digital camera, ink, and colored paper to create their own memoirs.
