My students are from New Haven, Connecticut. I teach first grade for a charter school. My school has very high academic expectations for both the students and their families. My students are in first grade so they are very young. They have not yet developed a true love for reading even though the academic expectations are incredibly high. I've always had great success exceeded the academic goals for my first graders but when they enter higher grades and need to heavily rely on reading to learn, they do not love reading. This school year, I want to encourage and foster the love for read. My students have 25 minutes a day for independent reading where they can go shopping for books and then engage with those books. They enjoy picking out books, they enjoy sharing books and they love moving up Fountas and Pinnell reading levels.
