The purpose behind this project it to provide students with the tools to confidently explore independent reading. Many of my middle school students struggle with reading, and as a result, become anxious, frustrated, and stressed when asked to read in class. My hope for this project is to develop a library for my students that contains all genres of books at various lexile levels. Along with providing students with a variety of literature to choose from, I hope to create an environment within this space that promotes comfort and getting lost in a good book!
Students deserve the opportunity to explore literature outside what is assigned in the classroom.
With the books purchased in this project, students will be given the power of choice. Currently, my students do not have access to modern teen literature. These books will vary in genre, length and lexile in order to meet the needs of all students. Additionally, the decoding, fluency, and phonics curriculum books will provide new insight on how to teach reading skills to students.
In order to create a calming environment that encourages reading, I have requested a soft carpet, bean bag chairs, and sitting pillows for the students to use while lost in their books.
Lastly, I have requested basic classroom supplies such as construction paper, glue, scissors, and organization tools. With these materials, students will be able to engage in more hands-on, project based learning.
Students confidence in reading grows when they are engaged in reading a text that they chose! Practice leads to growth, self confidence, and encourages self exploration!
