Exploring the Global City in Film
Funded Jan 13, 2010Thank you so much for supporting the Exploring the Global City in Film project. The four Flip cameras that you provided us allowed students to make independent short films about their city. The project was a great success. Over 45 students in 2 classes were able to check out cameras over the course of the semester and gather footage using composition and camera techniques we studied in class. They then learned to use imovie to edit their footage and uploaded their videos on Vimeo. Below are links to two of the student films.

Students also captured stills from their footage and created google maps to map out the areas of the city they defined as "their city." This class will be repeated and the flip cameras you provided will continue to be an integral part of the course. They have proved invaluable to the school as a whole as one was brought on our school's community action group trip to Washington D.C. where students participated in a Habitat for Humanity build. The flip camera allowed students to document the trip and share it with the whole school as well as all those who helped us raise money to make it happen. This classroom project was brought to life by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and one other donor.Becoming the Media with Digital Video
Funded Nov 7, 2006Thank you so much for helping my students "become the media". Your assistance will allow us to continue working in even smaller groups on video projects. Currently we have been relying on a borrowed camera and my own personal camera. Your help will allow us to have smaller groups so that each student can get more hands on experience making and editing digital videos. I have seen that this process can turn on even the most reticent student. It allows them to not only express themselves in a new and exciting way, but have a deeper understanding of the media they are exposed to every day.
Thank you again for your generous contribution.
