Spicing Up Early Literacy

Funded Jun 19, 2017

We have truly enjoyed our new materials! Upon seeing them, the students replied, "For us?! Someone nice did this?" It lent itself to have some great conversations about the importance of giving, not just receiving. Down the road we hope to be able to give back too!

The alphabet tubs have been very versatile to use with various age levels and the students love seeing the real-life objects each tub contains. They are making connections to these objects in their own language and also learning the English names too. We have used the objects to make sentences both orally and written, and even made a few whole group stories that use the objects in them.

Our active action mats are a great warm-up for us as we enter the room or just need some movement breaks between our activities. These too have helped us build language, learn colors, and occasionally even get to give each other directions. They kind of like getting to be the boss some times!

Finally, our storytelling glove--this has been the most favorite addition! We are becoming familiar with each set of puppets' stories, retelling, and even trying to come up with new endings to the stories. The kids especially love when they get to hold the glove on their own hands and say the story with their peers adding or taking away characters.

We plan to extend the activities these materials have provided as we get more proficient in our speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The sky is the limit!”

With gratitude,

Mrs. L
