I teach grades 7-12 in a large city school. My school is 60% low income and is ethnically diverse. Five percent of students have special education plans which utilize inclusion and pull-out programs. At this time, there are approximately 1,000+ students taking music classes. These classes include: Band, Orchestra, Choir, Music Theory, Guitar and Music Appreciation. Only a handful of students are able to participate in private lessons outside of school and many have limited exposure to professional performances. I try to give my students everything they need to be successful. Working with my school community and grant writing is a very important part of my funding.
