My students are primarily from immigrant families from the Dominican Republic. Almost all of them qualify for free lunch and many are English Language Learners. My students care a lot about getting to college and starting a career that can support their family. They are passionate about basketball and it is a tremendous motivator for them both in school and on the field. Many are high level basketball players who train year around and desperately want to go to college on a scholarship, where they will likely be the first member of their family to graduate with a college degree. Our school is a small, intimate public school where teachers work very hard to create a warm, caring environment with high expectations for the students and their success.
