  • Help Us Get High Quality Basketballs!

    Funded Oct 31, 2024

Thank you very much for the purchase of the new basketballs. They have greatly aided our PE and after school basketball club programming! The balls we used to use were getting really worn down, and with basketball being the most popular sport kids play, there were arguments over the use of the equipment and at times not everyone was even able to use at the same time.

Now, the kids are excited with game, high quality basketballs, and enough of them! The ones we had that were very old were able to be discarded, and the ones that were previously the most sought after, are now still in the mix so that everyone who wants a ball can play.

Shooting baskets with friends as a break from a long school day is a wonderful way to stay mentally and physically healthy. Not everyone wants to play in a big game all together, and now, with enough resources students are able to do what they want.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Krinsky

  • WHEELS Basketball Tournament Fees

    Funded May 17, 2016

Funding the project, WHEELS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT FEES, has been an enormous help and will continue to help into the coming school year. As mentioned in the project description, our school does not have funding available to cover non league games, summer tournaments, team camps and extra events. These extra events are so important to keep the team together, to build team spirit and a sense of togetherness that will last throughout the students' high school experiences and beyond.

This spring we were able to participate in a number of great events, thanks to your generous donations. Our students were able to play in top level tournaments on the campus of four year colleges, Hofstra University and Iona College, where they were able to play against some of the best teams in the region in front of college coaches. Numerous members of our team are receiving interest from college coaches, and participating in these events are a big reason why.

As the fall and the school year starts, we will be participating in a great pre-season fall tournament to get our team ready for the season, as well as playing in numerous events during the season this winter that are paid for by this project. Thanks so much for providing these experiences, we could not have done it without you!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Krinsky

  • Basketballs For Basketball Team

    Funded Nov 13, 2015

Your support of our students was essential this year. Without your support of the WHEELS Basketball program, there is no way we could have run the program. The program includes the Junior Varsity as well as the Varsity teams with almost 30 students. To play, we need uniforms, basketballs, referee and entry fees for tournaments. The bare bones league schedule that the city gives us is 12-14 league games, but that is not enough. With your support we were able to get closer to the maximum of 24 games and got to play in some high level, high exposure tournaments that carry entry fees that we did not have the money to pay for within the school budget.

Specifically, your donations went to three main areas: uniforms and warm ups, team sneakers, basketballs and the tournament entry fees. The tournament fees allowed us to play in holiday events and classics including two Thanksgiving tournaments, a holiday tournament, a Martin Luther King Jr. Day Classic, and a prestigious playoff tune-up in Long Island.

The uniforms were obviously necessary to be able to play. Can't play without uniforms. Same with basketballs. The warm ups and sneakers were something the kids were extremely excited about. Having the same sneakers as their teammates brought them together, and the warm up suits they would wear to road games, as well as during school, which really produced a sense of pride and identification.

The teams had very successful seasons, with both Junior Varsity and Varsity winning their division titles as the top teams in Manhattan, and advancing far in the city-wide playoffs. With only two seniors on the varsity team, and with strong players returning and moving up to varsity from the JV, next year should be even more fruitful. Even more importantly, every member of the program was able to meet the academic requirements necessary to remain on the team, with no one failing off! We look forward to more continued support to help the student-athletes remain on the right track to college.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Krinsky

My students are primarily from immigrant families from the Dominican Republic. Almost all of them qualify for free lunch and many are English Language Learners. My students care a lot about getting to college and starting a career that can support their family. They are passionate about basketball and it is a tremendous motivator for them both in school and on the field. Many are high level basketball players who train year around and desperately want to go to college on a scholarship, where they will likely be the first member of their family to graduate with a college degree. Our school is a small, intimate public school where teachers work very hard to create a warm, caring environment with high expectations for the students and their success.
