My students require help in accessing the general education curriculum usually due to lagging social skills or written expression. In our small groups we build student confidence by closing the skill gap, strengthening social interactions, and helping young people to regulate their emotions appropriately. At home, students are immersed in multimedia from documentaries to animation and video game design. From these experiences students bring a wealth of knowledge back into the classroom. What's been missing however is that same experience thoughtfully applied within the classroom. Engaging our small groups in peer editing by projecting their original works on the screen will create a powerful form of whole group instruction! Document cameras also allow for video capture. Students can film themselves revising a work and explaining aloud why they are making each editorial change. These videos can be viewed by other students thus helping them to master the same decision-making skills. The projector is a flexible tool which both integrates with the document camera as well as work independently. By watching and discussing daily news clips projected for whole class instruction, my students will have authentic topics to discuss during social skills practice. In turn these same topics will be used for the opinion and informational writing that underpins the peer editing process. This technology will create a more accessible, dynamic and authentic educational practice for our students. THANK YOU for bringing proven media and technology to our students. The Room 6 Team is eager to watch our middle schoolers grow, both socially and academically, thanks to YOUR GENEROSITY!
