Let's Rock with Science

Funded Oct 31, 2015

Thank you so much for your generous contribution to our science curriculum. Our class is enjoying the rocks unit very much. First we studied the minerals. It's been fun to see them bring in rocks found at home and identify the minerals in them. Other classes bring in rocks for us to identify, too. After studying minerals, we began the types of rocks. With our igneous rock study, we made fudge in the classroom, allowing it to cool in three different ways to simulate the slow cooling of intrusive rocks and the quick and very quick cooling of extrusive rocks. And we just completed our study of sedimentary rocks. I can't tell you how helpful it has been to have all the rock samples you funded. We are looking forward to our metamorphic rocks study next before we move on to core sampling and weathering. The children at our school have very little exposure to science and few are in family situations where they explore nature, geology, or any branch of science (unless it's through computer games on their own). This has been very meaningful to them, and they are very protective of our rock samples. They treat them with great care - even the mica, which provides a natural temptation to split into layers. Again, I thank you for making this possible.”

With gratitude,
