Giving Students choice in what they read, and ensuring that at some of those choices reflect my students' lived experiences, will create a powerful welcoming reading environment in my classroom. These three YA novels were purposefully chosen due to what they can bring to my students. Gabi: A Girl in Pieces, by Isabel Quintero, and Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass, by Meg Medina, both use translanguaging, with characters dynamically shifting their language choices between English and Spanish. Students will have the opportunity to read books with characters who interact with language in a way that feels familiar. Booked, by Kwame Alexander, is an accessible text about a teenager who loves soccer but hates to read. I am excited for my more reluctant readers to experience way Kwame Alexander plays with language as he tells this story.
