Funded Dec 2, 2021We cannot begin to express how excited we have been to gradually receive all the diverse books from our wish list! Students have begun reading aloud "The New Kid" in class and having great conversations around race, education, and systems of power. In book clubs, students read books such as "Front Desk," "Dancing Home," and "Tía Lola," discussing the hardships of immigration and pulling out lessons such as "Don't be embarrassed about your culture." Because of your generosity, students are being exposed to rich literature that reflects who they are early on, affirming their identities and empowering them to use their voice for good.
Students have enjoyed using the cushions during book clubs, and we were able to color print some of their Black History Month projects on our new printer, which brought students a lot of pride and joy!
Thank you again for your continued support for the work we are doing in the classroom. We could not do it without you!”

Funded Mar 16, 2021We have to tell you how much we loved the books you donated to us. They are refreshing, relevant, and eye-opening.
We received some of them in time to read before the end of the year, such as "Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag," and it really made an impact on students. Inspired by this story, one student even chose to research LGBTQ+ advocacy as her end-of-year passion project. These books helped pave the way for important conversations to be had in our classroom about equity, diversity, and self-love.
We look forward to using the book sets you purchased this year too, in our social justice literature circles. I am excited for students to learn about heroes like Malala and learn about the important history of the Japanese internment camps as introduced in "Sylvia and Aki."
Thank you again for your generosity in donating these books!”

Funded Dec 27, 2020We have to tell you how much we loved the books you donated to us. So far we've read One Crazy Summer, a book about the three daughters who grow in their understanding of love and justice as they attend a summer camp run by Black Panthers in Oakland in 1968. Students were so engaged in discussions around family dynamics, racism, bias, poverty, media portrayals, and character growth as we read.
Here are some direct quotes from the students:
"I liked the book because its about these three sisters that are going to meet there mother for the first time and they realize Oakland is very different from Brooklyn" - Syda
"I like the book because it has such a great storyline and it's and amazing story about 3 sister's and their mother that left them when they were little little kids" - Monica
"That was an amazing book that was donated to us." - Isabel
"This is a book about family." - Marianna
"This book taught us about racism." - Brian
"I liked the book because it had such a good storyline and there were a bunch of surprises that just kept coming and coming!" - Desiree
Thank you again for your generosity in donating these books!”

Flexible Seating to Provide Choices
Funded Dec 6, 2019We are so enjoying the new flexible seating you have generously provided our classroom! Now students are able to have more choice over where and how they would like to get their work done. When my students first walked into the room and saw the green ball chairs, their eyes got so wide and they were so thrilled to try them out! A week later, the wobble chairs arrived, and the students went crazy over them too. We've been practicing safe ways to sit on both types of chairs and not fall over! (They do take a good amount of core strength!)
During our lessons at the carpet, some of my more squirmy students know that when they are starting to lose focus, they can bring over one of the flexible seating options and sit on the edge of the carpet, so that they can still participate in our discussions. During group work time, these seats can be moved into small group circles so students can hold literature circles, or discuss their math problem-solving together. Overall, they have helped us not only focus more, but have some more fun in our room! Thanks again for your generous giving, and for helping our students to become more self-aware of their own learning needs.”

Funded Aug 28, 2019Our class library has become so much more colorful and diverse thanks to your generosity! You should have seen the children's faces when I brought the books out and explained to them why they had been donated. Some were outwardly ecstatic while I could tell others were just quietly taking it all in. Some of them have not had the opportunity to read books about characters and real-life heroes who look like them up until this point. Thank you for providing quality literature to my students that will not only motivate them to read more but hopefully inspire them to tell their own stories and recognize that their voices need to be heard in this world!”

Funded Jun 27, 2019Having these two Chromebooks in our classroom has been amazing for these first few weeks of school! When I told students they had been donated by generous donors like yourself, they asked me "Why??" I shared with them that people who don't even know them believe in their potential and want them to have all the tools they need to be successful and prepared for the future. They were blown away.
So far, we have used these devices to access Online Adaptive Programs including Prodigy Math, which students really enjoy playing to hone their conceptual and computational math skills. They also have begun using the Chromebooks for writing, learning to create Google docs through Google Classroom so that they can begin publishing their stories. In the future, I hope to have students begin uploading their work onto digital portfolios on Class Dojo, a great website that parents can also access.
Having this technology in the classroom is a game-changer, as it is user friendly and is easier to type on than the ipads we have access to. I also appreciate that having them teaches digital citizenship, as each student has their own unique login and needs to take care to protect their information and communicate appropriately online. Finally, this technology has helped to engage some of my more reluctant learners, as it motivates them and gives students another means to express their understanding of content. I would love to get even more devices donated in the future, but this has been a great start! I thank you all again for thinking of our students!”

Ms. Moy
