My students face various educational, social and physical challenges every day. While many typically developing children learn through imitation, my students sometimes depend on visual aids, color coding and prompted assistance to help them acquire basic skills. Due to the wide range of ages and abilities learning domestic and care skills can be daunting and a variety of materials that support their individual needs will enable them to become more self-sufficient. By learning how to take care of at least one of their personal needs their overall quality of life will be enhanced. They need materials that will introduce and help them learn a variety of tasks. Materials like toothpaste and toothbrush covers will teach them about oral hygiene and the mechanics of brushing their teeth. Toothbrush covers will keep their toothbrushes clean and teach them about storage, germs and sanitation. Face wash and cloths will teach them how to wash their face, especially after meal times on Pizza Fridays. The students who are physically ready to start learning how to tie their shoes but do not yet understand the concept of left and right will benefit from dual colored shoelaces. Cleaning supplies, a broom and dust pan will promote responsibility for maintaining their personal supplies and work area by cleaning up after themselves. Hangers and a garment rack will help them with sorting and putting away their clothes. Plates, cups, utensils will be utilized to teach dish washing, cutting, eating, food prep and storage skills. Learning to perform some "chores" or simple life skills in school will provide my students with a sense of accomplishment and independence. When those skills are generalized into the home, it improves the quality of life not just for the student but for their entire family.
