Scholastics Magazines - Help Young Readers!
Funded Nov 18, 2014Thank you so much for your generous donation. The students have thoroughly enjoyed reading world articles about controversial and relevant topics. They are enthusiastic and excited to get their new magazine each month, immediately flip through it, and discuss or debate articles.
During class we have enjoyed reading articles together and having discussions about the topics. The magazines have been an excellent resource in nonfiction and analyzing cartoons or primary sources. Often it has been a perfect supplemental material to classwork and homework since codex, our reading guide, does not have a homework component outside of the writing tasks. The students enjoy doing the crossword puzzles and collaborating on assignments. In addition, there are links and videos that help students understand ideas and concepts more deeply.
Finally, the magazines have helped me immensely with combining social studies and english language arts. Scholars have had an opportunity to practice map skills, answering questions, and making arguments. Many of the articles have debates and contrasting points of view which has helped students with making claims and counter-claims. In addition, I love using the crossword puzzle because it a valuable skill that students can attain at an early age and carry with them for the rest of their lives. It requires them to use memories, knowledge in all areas, and they research for answers they do not know. Also, the articles cover difficult and complex topics that the students want to know more about, but need access to the information at their reading level.
Thank you again for your generosity. It has enhanced my instruction greatly and the scholars have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Dean
This classroom project was brought to life by Wells Fargo and 7 other donors.Last Month Book in Preparation for 7th Grade
Funded Jun 22, 2013Thank you kindly for your book donation to my class. As soon as I pulled the Julius Caesar graphic novel out, the students were dying to read it right away, and did not want to wait until May when we have the unit on Ancient Rome. In addition, the students were very enthusiastic about reading it because many of them already enjoy comics and graphic novels.
My students will use this book during the unit on Ancient Rome as a fictional passage to pair with all the non-fiction studies. This book will be a great companion so they can do a comparison study of the government and the history to the the way Shakespeare embellished history and relevant facts. Also we have been performing tableau's using ancient Chinese stories, I can further this but having the students perform different parts of the play. Finally, they will begin to understand prose and style of classic writing and it opens the possibility to creative writing as well.
This project will boost the confidence and knowledge of the students as they learn about Ancient Roman history, politics, and culture. Furthermore, when working with all boys middle school, it is important to use resources that will motivate and interest them. This book will definitely enhance the curriculum. Overall watching their reaction and their continuous questions to read the novel has made it evident that this will be an exciting unit.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Dean
