Our school sits in the rural town in West Virginia. Approximately 60-70% of our school would qualify for free and reduced lunch. I have 25 third grade students in a small classroom environment. Many of my students come from low income backgrounds, have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, have qualified for special services within our school, perform below grade level, and struggle to stay on task. Ninety-two percent of my students are performing below grade level in reading according to a standardized assessment we use in our county. Eighty percent of my class have scored below grade level on a math inventory that is given at the beginning of each year. Although these students face many challenges within the school walls as well as outside they are eager to learn. Last year, despite the odds, our school was able to maintain satisfactory scores on the standardized assessment conducted at the completion of 3rd through fifth grades.
