Historical Fiction Book Clubs
Funded Dec 19, 2023Thank you so much for your generous gifts! You greatly enhanced our Historical Fiction unit. Our 7th grade classrooms have such a diversity of readers: some are well ahead of grade level (and could honestly be successful in AP Lit classes at age 12!), while others are still recovering from the disruption of Covid, and need remedial work to help them catch up. The task of providing appropriate supports, opportunities, and motivations to each learner is complex. The variety of books you provided helped us meet each student where they were and challenge them appropriately; having sufficient numbers for "book clubs" allowed us to harness their very social natures and inspire them to read more.
Through this unit, students worked on analyzing many things: context, the varieties of pressures individuals face when confronted by forces beyond their control, and the ways characters' perspectives are shaped and can conflict with each other. They looked at author's craft and how specific choices writers make can impact our own perspectives as readers. They became students of the eras they were immersed in, with some doing additional outside research to build up expertise.
Seeing their engagement and enjoyment was immensely gratifying. Many students are continuing to read from our Historical Fiction library, even after we finished the unit. We are seeing growth in their reading skills throughout all classes. This would not have been possible without you!”

Interdisciplinary Project on the Vietnam War Requires Books!
Funded Apr 11, 2006Thank you so much for your generous donation! Our students have started studying the Vietnam War in their history classes, and are excited to read about soldiers' experiences. We've been gathering materials and putting our unit together, and when the donated books arrive we will be well on our way.
Your gift will allow and inspire our current students, as well as future 11th graders at our school, to read relevant, engaging literature and connect history to their lives.
Thank you again for you donation!
