My Freedom Writers...

Funded May 16, 2009

As a teacher, I try to incorporate technology in the classroom so that the students understand how the information they learn can be applied to the modern world they live in. My school has given the students access to computers, and thanks to your generous donations, the students also have access to a color laser printer. This printer helped the students to turn their stories and research into books they could be proud of. The students were able to research topics and print biographies, facts and photos. This information helped them to write their own stories and reports and create amazing nonfiction books. They went from students to authors of their own books thanks to the technology they were provided with.

Along with writing their own books, the students also received new books to read as part of your donation. These books appeal to the modern child, with issues that range from school to family and friends. The students in my class have always had trouble becoming engaged in reading because they could not relate to the texts. Thanks to the new books, they have become engaged and are continuing to seek out similar books to continue their reading. They have library cards and make regular trips to the library to continue reading their favorite series or find new books to keep their attention.

Thanks to all the reading and writing made possible by your donations, the students in my classes are performing better on their tests and practice exams for upcoming finals. Their exposure to good books has shown them that they too can be writers and write about what they know. They are continuing to write journals and they plan on using their printer to print out the manuscript to their first class journal...a collection of stories about them and written by them. They have gained a better appreciation for reading and writing because of the generous donations you have provided them with and we thank you.”

With gratitude,

Ms. S.
