Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry Novel Study!

Funded Nov 1, 2020

Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry project/read was a huge success for our face-to-face and online learners. Due to your generous contributions, each student had their own individual copy to highlight. annotate, and indulge with other questions that sparked their thinking while reading. The novel focused on racism and discrimination in the 1930s in Mississippi. Even though the setting takes place centuries ago it contributes to the current conversation about race in America. We learned about the different themes that were manifested in the novel like family, independence, and justice. Inferring specific information about characters and events and how certain events or scenarios are prevalent still today. Also identifying, understanding, and describing the social and economic injustice against black people in the South during this time. Lastly, there were many literary elements that were notated within the novel such as allusions, extended metaphors, foreshadowing, irony, symbolism, round and flat characters, and stereotypes. Even though the novel's main character was an African American young girl many of the Hispanic students were still able to make connections with the characters and relate to many events in the story. Thanks for your kind donations!”

With gratitude,
