Funded Oct 19, 2017Thank you so much for your generous donation to improve the odds of our students' success! The tablets allow my gifted students to move about the room to work in ways that are comfortable to them. Some students lay on mats to work, others in corners or under the tables as forts! The private spaces they are able to use allow them to focus more. Our students use the tablets to access apps for our maker space in the classroom! Websites that I was able to add, gave students an opportunity to participate in engineering and design challenges, in order to practice science, math, and problem solving!
The educational apps that came with the games gave students instant access to problem solving using their background knowledge of standards they already knew. Games such as Subway Surf, allows students to practice their motor and visual skills. Talking Tom, allowed students to explore the option of theater and how animation works! I-storybooks, allowed students to create their own digital stories for publishing in the classroom!
I have a few particular students who really enjoyed using this technology. It helped them to focus more, have access to higher level apps to creativity, and regulated behavior. During morning work, these students were able to work on the tablets instead of pencil and paper. During Daily 5 rotations; these students were able to access the technology station instead of waiting for another group to finish. All students were able to choose technology as their first choice if they wanted to! Again, thank you so much for giving our kids the equipment needed to keep up with our advanced world. My hope is that one day these students will become great leaders, based on the support and opportunities that people like you give them.”

Creative Minds In An Innovative World
Funded Dec 1, 2015Dear Donor,
Thank you so much for your contribution of books to start our Gifted and Talented mini library! My students were so excited when I told them they had an extra Christmas present when they came to class. They could not wait to get their hands on all of the books. Harry Potter and Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series were the biggest hit. My second grade students challenged themselves to read the big Harry Potter books! One student expressed to me that this past weekend a television network showed a Harry Potter Movie Marathon!
They way that I help classroom teachers teach reading skills is by allowing the kids to have a book/story that interest them in order to learn the skill. Two of the skills that our second grade students struggled with this year were identifying details to support the main idea and fact and opinion. Diary of a wimpy Kid was a perfect book to begin with because it relates to the students everyday life and what goes on in their little world. They were able to take scenarios or situations from those books, apply it to the real world, put themselves in those positions to understand if a statement was something that one just thinks as an opinion or fact. Book walks/talks were the students have a small group Daily 5 leader to discuss the topic with each other also helped build their learning stamina for staying focused in something they enjoyed learning about.
In my classroom, reading begins with the students, not me! I always allow the students to explore on their own first. I do this because I want them to become independent learners. This will help mold them into succeeding in the real world without me every step of the way. Students are not contained to a desk. Students are allowed to read on the floor with mats, on pillows, under a table or desk, in corners, where ever they feel safe and comfortable. Lamps or lit around the room for enough light instead of the classroom lights. This creates a calm atmosphere along with soft classical music playing in the background.
They students are planning for what books they want to start with next year that they didn't complete or get to read in order to read all of them by the end of next year. Once again, we are so appreciative for what you have done. Because of your help, our students are that much closer to reaching their goals and obtaining their dreams in life.”
