As the holidays approach the 3rd grade has decided to engage students in a literature study using the Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg as the guiding text. Students will engage in literature activities such as describing adjectives and writing about a place they can go on a journey. We will study character traits and write letters to the characters in the text. We will differentiate the lessons and discuss metaphors and figurative language the author uses. We will talk about vivid language and making a mind movie when we read and what words does the author use to make the book come alive. We are an arts integration school and intend to recreate the train in the classroom and paint scenes from the book that are compelling. During this unit the study of trains would be used for science and engineering and the arctic will be explored for social studies. The culminating activity would be a viewing of the movie the Polar Express with pajamas, cookies and hot cocoa. In a world that is so literal and unimaginative, this unit will allow students to engage in a magical experience about believing in the impossible.
