There are numerous studies showing the impact learning an instrument can have on brain development. This year, my fifth grade students had a choice in which type of music class they would take. All of the students in my class have decided they would like to learn how to play a band instrument. I have never taught fifth grade band during the school day until this coming year. In previous years, many of students showed a lot of interest in learning to play an instrument however, cost and finding a ride were the main reasons many students were unable to be a part of this group. With classes now scheduled during the school day, and with the help of donated instruments from our community, we are able to start instruction. The method books provided with this grant will give students the chance to learn to read music from quality materials while preparing them for music literacy in middle school. The goal for my students is to gain skills and experiences, both in and outside of music, they can build upon as they grow into community-oriented professionals. We will try, fail, learn, try again, succeed, challenge, try, fail, work together and support each other as we endeavor to better ourselves.
