Eager Artists: Raising Art Confidence with Helpful Technology
Funded Sep 17, 2015When this project got funded so quickly, I was taken aback! I was so moved! To say the students were excited, too, is an understatement. Like me, they were so touched that people like you decided to donate to our classroom. I can honestly say that by now, only a few short weeks later, most if not all of the art students have already had an opportunity to use the new supplies.
Here is one example of how we are already putting these supplies to use: The Art 2 students each needed a reference image for their most recent project. Having two iPads provided them with so much freedom and flexibility to do this – some found their inspiration online, and some took and edited their own photographs. A few even Airdropped photos from their own phone to the iPad (a feature I didn't even know existed until the students taught me!) All of them were able to easily print to our new wireless printer. This expedited the process of getting reference photos greatly and the impressive results of their art projects reflect how much this has helped.
Another time the iPads have helped the students is during our recent Still Life project when Art 1 students were doing drawings of objects set up in the classroom. Many students used their cell phones to take photos so they could go back to their seats to draw. For the few students who do not have cell phones, they were able to use the class iPad. I was so glad that these students didn't have to feel "left out" because they didn't have the same tools at their disposable as everyone else.
Another great benefit of having the iPad is that Merritt Island High School's art department is now able to have its own Instagram account, @mihs_art! Now, students can take pictures of their artwork that I can later post on our class account. This way, students and their families and friends get to see a glimpse of what is going on in the art room. I love that we can keep people up to date with all the great things we're doing.
The art students use the iPads and the printer every single day. There are so many different ways these resources have already helped us, the above examples are just a few. Similar to the "AirDrop" feature, I'm sure the students will continue to be innovative and teach me new ways these tools can benefit us. And if the past few weeks are any indication, I'm sure the students will continue to enjoy their new ability to take art room selfies... boy, do they love taking selfies.
These new tools fit into the creative process in the art room so well, I almost don't know how we did things before we had them. Thank you again for your generosity towards the MIHS Art students!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Rensing
