These books will be loaned to students to use at home (and at home if we return to school) to be used as part of our language arts instruction, With the recent spotlight on racial inequality, I wanted to find a book to share with my students that would help us to start to have a discussion about these injustices in an age-appropriate manner. I also wanted my students of color to be able to perhaps see themselves in some of the characters in the book. The book takes place in a wealthy private school, a very different type of school than the one that my students attend. The main character is biracial with dark skin while his brother is also biracial but appears white. As a result, the main character is stereotyped as a trouble-maker based on the color of his skin and targeted by the school bully, the captain of the fencing team. The main character decides to beat the bully at his own game and learns how to fence with one of the unknown legends of the sport. Along the way, the main character makes some friends, learns something about fencing and a lot about himself and tries to "foil" racism.
