Back to the Basics!
Funded Apr 8, 2022We are so grateful for your generous donations. We received some of the materials before the end of last school year. One really helpful material was the projector screen! It created a more open space in my classroom and allowed all students to see the screen. Previously, students had to shuffle around or take a picture of the screen then zoom in to take notes. It also gave more mobility! I was able to change up the classroom layout accordingly by simply sliding the portable projector screen around.
My advisory class came in to help set up the projector screen and were so excited. They said, "whoa finally! We're not using the back of a shelf to project!" They even help set up the yoga balls and were happy they did not have to "call dibs" on the only ball I got at a garage sale. My students with ADHD were more eager to sit and read. It helped them stay focus. (It's always fun to see students rush to choose their seats as well)
I waited to hand out the color coded notebooks to my new students this school year and we all appreciate it. Each class got their own color notebook and it makes finding their notebook easier! It makes grading more streamline for me and my EA as well. It made the first week of school more streamlined as students came in. We were able to immediately set up their notebooks and use them!
Your generosity helped us springboard into this school year and I am so excited for my students to create and present their autobiographies with the supplies you donated!”

Funded Oct 23, 2015I want to thank you so much, third quarter was our time to finally dig into these materials. We introduced the unit/ the project and showed them the supplies and my students were excited. Our students have not had an art class since grade 7 and it was a shock for them to get to use art again. It took time, but when we finally got to practice painting on canvases and then the wall itself, the students were ecstatic! (for weeks all I heard was, "when are we going to paint?!)
I remember them struggling for 2 weeks with a design that best represented their class, class of 2016. Once the artists sat down and reviewed the classes' input, the design was created. The best part of this whole project was watching the students collaborate, each piece of the mural was suggested and executed by a different student. On student came up with the idea of the flag, another the mountain range, another the hawk, another the pop out effect, and another student pitched an idea to honor their former teacher, (the hibiscus flower). It was in doing this project the students had to work with each other, despite their differences and came up with brilliant ideas, techniques and truly created something about themselves.
This project was a part of the unit theme, "I am from Nanakuli and I am _________." They defined who they were because of their community and culture. They completed a cover poem for a 5 page paper on which they will reflect on old work they have done, past experiences and other elements that contribute to who they are, who they believe they are. This project not only calls on the students to reflect on themselves solely, but who they are in this community and how they contribute to the community that helped shaped them. It has been a long, difficult process looking through different analytical lenses, examining self, and analyzing themselves, but it has been worth it.”
