  • Legos for Teaching Sequence, Algorithms, Encapsulation, and Community Building

    Funded Jan 17, 2025

My sincerest thanks on behalf of my school, my students and myself for your support of the computer sciences in the South Bronx! The impact of these lego sets has been profound on my students. Having access to these legos for teaching algorithms, sequencing, encapsulation and functions has already been fantastic! It has also been a joy to promote community building and I have used them during advisory and club settings as well! One lesson I teach in my AP Computer Science curriculum involves establishing the need for programming languages. These legos have been perfect as student groups build a sculpture using Legos, document their process, and then must write corresponding algorithms and directions to rebuild the sculpture. Students then decompose the structure and another group has to rebuild their sculpture using the directions only.

This helps students identify the importance of code comments and syntax, general protocols and practices for communicating with computers and other programmers. This enables my students to explain the qualities that differentiate natural languages and programming languages and to justify the existence of programming languages to precisely communicate instructions.

This donation has enabled me access to a collaborative, physical medium to connect concepts to the programming space and my students have really benefited from having these Legos to design and create. These Lego sets now enable me to go beyond card sorting algorithms and turtle programming in the tangible realm, and have enhanced my ability with these physical manipulatives to connect with and support all of my learners.

We are so grateful for your contribution! This donation has helped our Seniors participate more fully in lessons and better understand important computer science concepts across all three of my curriculums. Thank you so much for your lovely support of our classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. McCoy

  • Student Generated Video Games - Research & Development

    Funded Oct 7, 2024

My sincerest thanks on behalf of my school, my students and myself for your support of the computer sciences in the South Bronx! The impact of this Nintendo Switch, multitude of games and the controllers has been profound on my students. In all of my classes, I have students who are pushing themselves beyond the web-based curriculum and are exploring video game design and creation in javaScript! Having access to this Nintendo Switch for research and development through the iterative design process has been so immensely impactful! Multiple student groups come to mind who have benefitted, including Steve and Kaylee who are designing an arcade style multiplayer game that very closely resembles the game play and visuals of super mario smash brothers. Another team, Marvin and Melvin, who are building out a 2D style racing game that mimics the gameplay of Mario Kart has also identified improvements through the use of this platform. This video game research and design station has enabled these groups as they design, debug and build to continue to push their process and product as they reach new stages of development and look to improve game play and visuals. Students are learning the key CS concepts in JavaScript and then identifying their use in these professional products. This is also helping give students the language to provide one another feedback and areas for improvement through the peer review process.

This donation has enabled me to build a collaborative programming space and my students have really benefited from having this space to map out and design video games and then perform their programming builds. This station is the perfect place for students to work and test professional creations in high resolutions and then to take their skills further in p5.js to create their own interactivity.

We are so grateful for your contribution! This donation has helped our Seniors participate more fully in lessons and better understand important computer science concepts. Thank you so much for your support of our classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. McCoy

    Funded Nov 2, 2024

Thank you so much for your support of college career readiness and hybrid learning in the South Bronx! The impact of these LG Screens and usb-c cables has truly been profound on our students across departments. All seven teachers on my teams that benefited from this project have expressed a sincere gratitude for the tools that are now enabling them to deliver much more effective virtual lessons on remote class days. These resources have truly helped us to better implement this hybrid learning model with our partnership as a member of the School Based Virtual Learning Program. This donation has enabled my colleagues to more easily manage the presentation of content, all while more closely monitoring my students and their engagement and understanding. All of our students in 11th and 12th grade have really benefited from having this extra presentation space during our virtual lessons to access content and entry point supports for differentiated instruction.

We are so immensely grateful for your contribution! Students who are currently having difficulty, can now more easily and more quickly get support as we can see all of their faces and the chat space alongside our presentations and multiple screen shares. This extra screen space also enables us to regularly toggle between google classroom, assignments, digital tools and much needed digital entry points and scaffolds to help our students access the content and build crucial conceptual understandings. We have found these LG screens to be incredibly impactful. This donation has helped all of our upperclassmen participate more fully in lessons and better access support. On behalf of my colleagues, our students and myself, thank you so much for your time and support of our classroom!”
