These materials will give my students hands-on experiences understanding decimals. We have used place value blocks to explain decimals, but they also need to use the money to make sense of the size and value of decimals. My students do understand that decimals are used in other areas of their life besides money, but to develop a strong understanding of this concept, money seems to be the best. I have over 90 students where sharing manipulatives is a struggle. These materials will allow students to work in pairs and small groups at their tables or on whiteboards. My classroom is surrounded by whiteboards so that students can be active learners, fully engaged in the work they are given. One of our favorite activities is acting as detectives. This allows students to critique the reasoning of others where they look for errors "crimes" committed by their peers while solving various decimal story problems. Students are expected to master quite a bit in 5th-grade math and the more opportunities given to them for sense-making the more successful they will become. Students love to talk about their learning and they are guided with intentional questioning to develop strong academic language while engaging in conversation with their peers. Mathematical language (academic language) is essential to the success of my students and these materials will allow them to engage in greater detail while solving problems.
