My students love to read nonfiction books. They can be seen pouring over books from the small nonfiction section of our classroom library. The images of planets, animals, maps, and people around the world spark interest and conversation. I am requesting funds to increase the number of nonfiction texts in my classroom.
Reading books that answer children's questions about the real world motivates learning and enhances the school experience. Reading informational text with young learners is a great way to help them connect school with the real world. It allows young students to understand the structure of nonfiction texts which they will be asked to read and write about independently in the upper grades. Reading to learn should begin in the earliest grades.
