Flexible seating opportunities give children with disabilities the opportunity to engage more effectively during instruction. With my diverse group of students on my caseload; differentiating instruction is necessary to meet all students need. Children with disabilities have the opportunity to choose a seat that can benefit them physically and engage them academically during instruction. I currently have 8 students with high functioning ADHD and ASD. These students need to wiggle throughout the day and have the need for sensory input. Being able to sit on wiggle chairs and balance balls, enables them to access the curriculum, and meet their sensory needs; with little to no distraction within the classroom. I also have students who have OHI ( other health impairments) who often become fatigued when asked to sit for long periods of time. With the use of bean bags, this helps relieve the uncomfortable seating and allows them to focus on instruction. The students will also have fluidity to move and rotate seats throughout the room. Countless studies show that when students are engaged through movement it boosts academic learning and achievement. I'm excited to give my deserving students this flexible seating advantage. Special education students deserve to learn in an effective learning environment, despite their struggles and challenges. Thank You for your consideration! Mrs. M
