My class is fifth graders who can all read, but most don't have a love of reading. My goal is to help them develop this love by offering many interesting titles to read and providing a regular time to read. The students are starting to get excited about the fact that they have thirty minutes to read what they want to read at the end of every school day. Our school is in a middle class neighborhood with a focus on English language learners. Some of the students have books at home to read, but many don't have any books at home that will support their content area learning. When I first introduced the forty book challenge, many felt fearful and overwhelmed that it wouldn't be possible. But as we have been reading daily and they have started completing books, they are starting to feel hopeful. More interesting books will help promote success.
