Diverse Readers
Funded Sep 16, 2020As social justice events unfolded this summer I felt a nudge to build stronger diversity within my classroom. I wanted to go beyond teaching a unit on Black History during Black History Month. When I started thinking about ways that I could implement cultural diversity in my classroom, I realized one of the greatest places to start was with children's literature. Representation in literature is so important for our students to see and my classroom library was lacking.
Due to your generosity, I have been able to add numerous books centered around the topics of cultural diversity. Students in my classroom can now look through my library and find representation that matches their own identify. Students can also read about topics from perspectives outside of their own, which is so important to help build empathy and understanding.
I have been able to incorporate many of these texts into our reading standards. As we study about making inferences, describing characters and plots, identifying theme, and more, we can use these text to help us do so. I am so thankful for your generosity and am proud that we are building a stronger cultural footprint in our world.”
With gratitude,
