Mistakes Can Lead to Success
Funded Jan 6, 2023These donations have changed the dynamic in my classroom from the minute they walk in. Although the students are clear that they are here as a redirection for their behaviors they feel welcomed, heard and inspired to correct behaviors and return to speak and share their experiences with others in the hopes they all make better choices.
I firmly believe that the earlier we engage our youth and help them see their self-worth, we will increase their chances of being productive citizens today and in the future.
Creating a structured yet nurturing classroom is my goal. The walls filled with inspirational quotes now serve as a subtle reminder that they can and will make better choices.
As students work through their consequences they learn valuable lessons about self-regulation, breathing, and thinking before they act. They also participate in restorative justice practices and social-emotional learning on a daily basis by our counselors. During this time the bean bags and the breathing balls have assisted in the students reaching their behavioral goals.”

This classroom project was brought to life by LOFT.Creating Interactive Booklets in Science
Funded Oct 13, 2015My students were greatly impressed and thankful when they opened up the box containing the printer they needed for their project. They were anxious to get started with the new supplies. They set up the printer and started right away to print their materials needed for their journal. The additional supplies (colored pencils and sharpener) enhanced the excitement they had to get started.
The students are delighted to have the printer readily available to them while creating their journals with my guidance and instructions. Having the printer in the classroom gives them a sense of accomplishment. The students cut out their handouts; they color them, and glue them in their journals. Finally, the students write, reflectively about the topic we have been studying.
Since the beginning of the project, students were a little reluctant about writing scientifically; today, I can say that they have improved their writing skills. This is demonstrated when they use their own words and new scientific vocabulary learned in the process of creating the journals. This writing process boosted their critical and scientific thinking, as well as, their creativity (which I consider a skill really important to foster in middle grade students.)
We all, students and teacher, are extremely happy that Chevron donated these supplies in order to fulfill this interesting and important project.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Casero
