When given the freedom and responsibility to explore, new ways of communicating, community building and, problem-solving can emerge, as students and educators are asked to engage in distance learning. This is exactly what has happened when I was given the directive to teach online. The challenge of setting up distance learning at home was enormous. As a teacher in a rural public school, we sometimes teach more than one subject. I teach both special needs students and the gifted. The motto in my classroom is that we do not give up, we find solutions. Besides, I wanted each of my students, both gifted and special needs to see that I will do everything I can to ensure that they continue to receive services. There were and will continue to be many successes, moments of joy, hope, laughter, fun, and purpose in this journey.
Therefore the use of state-of-the-art personalized digital equipment to deliver effective individualized literacy instruction to my students is a priority. The goal of the students who will use this resource is to improve reading and math scores by 50% because of improved engagement. With the pen, my students can access a writing app and practice writing the word sounds, so they will be building great fine motor skills as they’re learning their academic skills. The ultimate goal is to improve all aspects of literacy development, along with creativity, and critical thinking skills.
My students will be exposed to programs and activities to build background knowledge, enrich literacy experiences, and boost self-confidence. This new computer equipment will raise the students’ level of engagement and participation, and families’ willingness to try new things.
“Real change takes place in deep crisis; however, you will not stop the momentum that will build.”
