I teach 25 second graders that have been labeled below grade level. They lack the ability to recognize most sight words, comprehend grade level texts, and read fluently among other things. This is my first year teaching at a rural school in middle Georgia, where the poverty rate is extremely high. Our schools' free and reduced rate is well above 70%. Due to these financial needs, all of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. Unfortunately our school funding is also effected by such a poor community and there is little money to buy needed classroom supplies and j. It is my job and role to meet these children where they are, even if it's a grade level behind, and take them to where they need to be. In essence, I have to teach two years of content in one. I have accepted this challenge with great pleasure, but I really need some tools to enhance the process.
