  • Extreme Library Makeover

    Funded Dec 31, 2011

Thank you so much for giving to my project. Your generosity has benefited my students in so many ways. So many former reluctant readers are now more willing to give reading a chance. This is such a big deal, and I can not thank you enough for your contribution to my new classroom library.

Sherman Alexie, Sharon Draper and Matt Blackstone are some of my students' new favorite authors. Their book talks and independent reading journals show that they are interacting with the texts and are learning a little bit about themselves throughout the reading process. I remember how much being exposed to new texts helped me in my adolescent years, and it so amazing to be able to share this experience with my students. Thank you for your investment in their education.

    Eternally grateful,

    Ms. M”

  • A Call to Action

    Funded Sep 23, 2010

I am thrilled that my students and I were able to benefit from your generosity. With the books you donated, we were able to read about human trafficking and about the asylum process for people seeking refuge from persecution.

My students have never been more engaged and more interested in fighting for human rights as they have been this year. Because of generous donors like you, I was able to provide the literature that made their engagement possible. We have just finished reading Sold, a novel about sex trafficking in India, and the students are posting flyers around the school and trying to help make the school aware of some of the inhumanity and injustice going on in the world in which we live.

You don't know how happy I am that you are also dedicated to the cause of helping those who need some help. Working in one of the poorest congressional districts is challenging in many ways but because of people like you who help me bring out the best in my students, I realize that there is nowhere else I would rather work. My students and I thank you.”

  • Fighting Repression

    Funded Oct 26, 2010

I just wanted to thank you once again for giving to my Donor's Choose project. The students had a great time learning about the repressive regime in North Korea. Their eyes were opened to the injustices that are occurring in a place that was once very foreign to them. Because of their experience in this unit, they are learning to appreciate the opportunities granted to them and they are learning about the importance of speaking out against something they feel is wrong.

I have also benefited a great deal from your kindness. Working on this unit has reawakened in me a new level of passion for the work that I do. The students were so inquisitive and so eager to learn about the issues going on outside their country that I grew more and more excited about my curriculum as the days passed. I continue to grow enthusiastic as we begin our new unit with a similar theme.

You won't know how much your donation means to me and the kids. I hope you continue to be as charitable as you have been because it really does make a difference in the way a teacher performs his/her job and it most certainly makes a difference in how students experience learning.”

    With gratitude,

  • Quiet Reflection

    Funded Jan 23, 2010

The journals that you provided for my students have had a tremendous impact on them. They have been able to express their feelings in a private place that no one has access to but them. This is so important for my high school seniors. They have faced so many obstacles and have experienced so many hardships; having a place to let their emotions out has been amazing for them.

As a teacher witnessing their transformation, I feel blessed and thank you so much for your donation. Poetry is an important part of my life and has helped me get through so many difficult moments. I remember my first journal with fondness. It was blue with gold embroidery and I used this journal as a place where I could be myself. This has helped me develop into a stronger person. You have given this same gift to my kids.

Not only do my students have a place to write their thoughts because of you, they also recognize that there are kind people in the world. There are people who can give without asking for a monetary reward. For so long, their idea of success has been having money and fame; however, your gift has introduced them to philanthropy. One of our writing topics in poetry class is social action and making change. Donating to kids in one of the poorest congressional districts in the country shows that you care about making change. We recognize that and we are thankful.”

  • The Poet's Soul

    Funded Feb 2, 2009

I am overflowing with gratitude. Your donation of notebooks that served as poetry journals for my students was extremely generous. As a student of poetry, I know what it means to be able to express one's feelings freely and you have made this possible for my students.

My students were so excited to have received the journals and wrote in them every day. From villanelles to sestinas to odes, they were able to explore poetry and explore themselves. I believe that art really has the ability to touch lives and you have given my students a chance to create original works that really touched me and that really inspired me. My students are grateful and have made it clear that they will continue to use the journals now that the year has come to an end.

I am in awe of your kindness. Thank you so much for your generosity.”

    With gratitude,
