"Dinovember" in the Library!
Funded Oct 16, 2024My library classes loved Dinovember! We used these materials for close to 500 students. We had awesome new non-fiction, fiction books all about dinosaurs and Paleontologists. We began digging in the whole month of November!
Our third graders became Paleontologists using hands on materials. I prepped the library with leafy tablecloths and as they entered I welcomed them into our Paleontology dig with hats. Students loved digging for their dinosaurs! I heard terms like use the pick side, or brush off that part and let me see yours. They also realized that being a Paleontologist is much harder, they learned patience and hard work(lol, their hands hurt from it). Once their dinosaur was fully uncovered they went to the identification station. Students had to compare their dinosaur to the fact cards. Next they used their "field notebook" to jot down identifying characteristics and facts about their dinosaur. Students were so excited they were sharing with other third grade classrooms about library and the students could not wait till their library time.
Our younger students worked in centers. Matching upper case to lower case alphabet letters dinosaurs, matching numbers and dots, critically thinking by completing puzzles, and creating 3D dinosaurs! Students chose to go to the reading center due to all the cool books about dinosaurs. They are now flying off the shelves to students.
Our fourth grades completed creating their own dinosaur. They planned what characteristics it would have. Drew the dinosaur, then used clay to create the dinosaur. Last had to describe their dinosaur on paper and share with the class.
My next big project in the library will be our "McKell Derby Day" Where all students have a chance to participate in a derby activity prior to the race or be in the actual race.”

Lego Into Education
Funded Aug 4, 2016Thank you for your donation to our Lego wall. The students were excited and patiently waited for our wall to be hung. We started using our wall a week before Thanksgiving. What better time for our first challenge than to build something we are thankful for.
While observing I saw students work independently but when stumped by how to fix something asking a friend to help. The conversations between students discussing what they were thankful for were simply amazing. A small house still hangs on the wall.
Students went a little off track of building thankfulness. I was truly amazed to see the group had built a mini zoo, with animals and habitats for each animal. Obviously, I praised their creativeness.
My next challenge is to use our lever and pulley systems to invent snow ball machines.”

1,2,3D Printers Here We Come!
Funded Oct 12, 2016I am so excited to bring this technology to our school! Our students recently had a mobile technology lab visit and generated so many ideas about what they could do with our printer, which is now a reality. I would like to extend a thank-you to all my donors who made this possible.”
