These diverse graphic novels will support learners at my school of all levels, which is often challenging in a middle school! Most people know that graphic novels engage readers, but what you might not know is that graphic novels help with reading comprehension for all levels of readers. Reading graphic novels prepare readers to comprehend a range of multimedia messages; require all sorts of literacy skills such as sequencing, interpreting nonverbal gestures, making inferences; and help with understanding and recall for all learners because the brain has to use two different systems of cognition. This means that everyone from students in special education to students reading at a college level benefit from reading graphic novels, especially those that challenge them to explore different worldviews! Diverse graphic novels not only aid in reading comprehension but they also allow readers to expand their own lenses. I can't wait to get these books into the hands of students, where they belong!
