My students are sweet, hyper, and need lots of movement and engagement to stay focused. They like working in groups but need more relevant topics to hold their attention. Most of the textbooks we read don't have characters that look like them and the stories seemed so far-fetched from their reality. The Scholastic and Action Magazines that I requested worked well with my students last year and they cover the Common Standards while maintaining student interest. I also teach a lot of boys, so if I can teach them a reading strategy through a sports article, then it's a win-win for both parties involved.
